Up close with DeShawn Stevenson's fresh ink - Outlet - Washington Times

Earlier today, the great Mike Jones described Washington Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson as “the entertainer of the day,” and from the looks of things, he wasn’t kidding.

“You know me and Gil are kinda crazy, so I’ll say 50 wins this season,” he told the assembled masses at media day earlier on Monday.

The 50 wins prediction? Honestly, not so crazy. This team has talent, it’s just got to stay healthy. But then, there are the tattoos. DeShawn not only got healthy this past offseason, he went and got all inked up.

There have been a few photos out there of the new tats today (props to Truth About It), but I’m not sure you’ll see better renderings of them than what we’ve got here, as photographed by our very own Peter Lockley.

Peter got three shots, showing all three pieces of new neck and face art on Stevenson (as well as the sweet beard; a shame we can’t see the rat tail).

Some descriptions, cobbled from Mike’s earlier post:

The first is pretty self explanatory: That’s our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, on DeShawn’s throat.

On his right temple along his hairline, DeShawn has the word “LONDYN,” which is his 1-year-old son’s name.

On his left cheek bone is the Pittsburgh Pirate’s ‘P’. “That’s my favorite team,” Stevenson said. “Barry Bonds, when he first started.”

More from Mike:

The thing about the P is, however, that it’s backwards and looks more like a 9. DeShawn tried to explain, “No, if you’re standing where Dom’s standing and looking at me, it looks like a P.” Dominic McGuire was standing directly in front of him about 10 yards away, but it still looked like a 9. I think DeShawn meant to say, “when I look in the mirror it looks like a P.”

And finally, Stevenson got a crack inked on the left side of his forehead. “I don’t crack,” he said. “I feel like people always try to break me, but I don’t crack. So, I put that there.”

Mind you, unbreakable DeShawn Stevenson played all of 32 games for the Wizards last season because of a herniated disc in his back, which required surgery. But those kind of details aren’t near as fun as these tattoos. So, on this NBA media day … enjoy.

And again, excellent work, as always, by Peter and Mike — they’re the best.

IZI PICS: One Groom and Four Brides

A South African man has married four women at the same time. His name is Milton Mhbele, he is 44 and he is a municipal manager in Indaka. South African laws recognize polygamous marriages which in fact are common over there, but simultaneous weddings are rare.He has already been married to Thobile Vilakazi for 12 years and has 11 children. On September 26, he married Thobile a second time and also married three new wives: Happiness Mdlolo (24), Zanele Langa (24) and Smangele Cele (23). The women all wore white dresses and each of them received a ring and a kiss from the groom.

Apparently, the wives will live separately, with their husband rotating between them.
He said he saved money for combining the ceremonies and he added: “I don’t know what the future holds for me with them, but I am very excited about this, not just because it hasn’t been done before, but because I believe in it.”
Sometimes, it’s really hard to understand other cultures…

cultural differences or not, why would you want to subject yourself to such headaches?

Robert De Niro Jr. and his father, Robert De Niro Sr., mid-1970s

Like father like son…

In the 1940s, Bohemian New York would decamp to Provincetown, on Cape Cod, for the summer. “Washashores,” as the locals called them, included Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, Tennessee Williams, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Nin, who was reported to the police in 1941 for sunbathing topless, enjoyed the town’s legendary promiscuity: “The sand dunes are so white they seem at times like ski slopes,” she wrote in her diary. “Some night clubs are on the beach. The tables are set on terraces and jazz floats over the beach. Couples lie in the fishing boats.” Despite feeling outnumbered by homosexual men, Nin found herself lovers; in a story called “Life in Provincetown,” Nin’s female protagonist enjoys a different man each night. The cover photograph of Robert De Niro Sr., one of New York’s most prominent figurative expressionists and friend to all the above (also the father of the famous actor of the same name), was taken in the early 1940s as he was relaxing on one of P-town’s ski slope dunes.

Up In The Tree's

This was taken at Morningside Park Harlem, looking up into the trees. There’s a lot of calm amidst the chaos that is the inherited history of Harlem. Then again, everything feels safer above ground in Harlem

Great cover by Sonic Youth for an artist I have to say I didn’t really quite respect till her formative years but now maybe I can listen to her old stuff unbiased.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Like a herd of antelope, jockeying and shoving for position, 150 young women raced down Amsterdam’s most famed fashion street in stiletto heels Thursday, racing for a $15,000 prize.

The race on the P.C. Hooft street called the “Stiletto Run” is only three years old but has quickly grown in popularity and spawned imitation races in Germany, Sweden, Poland and Russia.

The race’s motto is “Shopping is a Sport” and friendly competition is encouraged X though not always observed.

“At the start there was a lot of pushing, you really get elbowed over,” said Fauve Stukje, 18, who came with a small entourage and a big pink sign X but failed to win, show or place.

She said she slightly regretted her choice of shoes, which were nearly 4 inches high X a little higher than the 3 1/2 inch minimum.

Tamara Ruben, 25, from the town of Veenendaal, claimed first prize in the 380-yard race, running so smoothly you might think she was wearing sneakers.

Asked how she would spend the money, she said: “Anything but high heels.”

Wild Wood by Paul Weller, Portishead Remix

High tide, mid afternoon
People fly by, in the traffics boom
Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going

Dont let them get you down
Making you feel quilty about
golden rain, will bring you riches
All the good things you deserve and now

Climbing, forever trying
Find your way out of the wild, wild wood
Now theres no justice
Only yourself that you can trust in

And I said high tide, mid afternoon
People fly by, in the traffics boom
Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going

Day by day your world fades away
Waiting to feel all the dreams that say
Golden rain will bring you riches
All the good things you deserve now

And I say, climbing, foreever trying
find you way out of the wild, wild wood
Said you are gonna find you way out of the wild, wild wood
Wild wild wood

Stanley Kubrick, great American Iconic Director

I love films, and I love good films, but what I love even more are great films. No other director made a collection of great films that I can think of other than Kubrick. What I love about Kubrick is his ability to see a great story, tell a great story and get the most out of an actor. I love that his background was originally in photography and he used that experience as a means to also set up his shorts.

I found this collage poster of his work and really loved it, now I gotta track down the artist and see about getting a real sized one for my wall. If any one knows, please let me know. As for Kubrick, Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb  is by far my favorite of all his movies and such a telling and forward looking movie into how the same hysterias that plagued the world back then still plague it. Same plot line, just different actors. The Shinning to this day is still the only movie that makes me cringe when I watch it. More info on Kubrick via allmovie.com

Yahoo Brands Flickr; Users Retaliate

It appears that a few days ago there was a slight change to Flickr’s

logo: an addition of a small Yahoo logo to the right side so it reads “Flickr from Yahoo.” In response, many Flickr users have taken to the photo-sharing site’s forums

to express their horror at Yahoo’s branding on Flickr.

The underlying fact is that Flickr users, many of whom are techy hipsters, just don’t mix well with “middle America Yahoo” as Bartz put it a few days ago at the unveiling of Yahoo’s $100 million marketing campaign about “Y!ou.” Bartz said to a roomful of journalists and bloggers:

“When you get outside New York and Silicon Valley, everyone loves Yahoo. I just want to transplant all of you guys out of your cynicism. What is wrong with you guys?. Go be cynical about frickin’ Google. You got me pissed off.”

Yahoo also got into a bit of a sticky situation with users when it removed a photoshopped image posted on Flickr of President Barack Obama that makes him look like the Heath Ledger (Joker) character from The Dark Knight. Flickr took the image down, citing a DMCA notice, adding that “We very much value freedom of speech and creativity.” Thomas Hawk had a good overview

of all the gory details.

Strangely, the company not only took down the image, but also removed the Flickr page and comments, even though this isn’t required by the DMCA. And then, in what was a totally contradictory move, Yahoo shut down the forum discussions about the political controversy, cutting off further political discourse about the image.

Judging from the comments in the discussions surrounding the (re)branding of Flickr, users don’t want to be reminded that Yahoo bought Flickr. On the forum, users call Yahoo “stale” and think the logo is “horrifying” and “ugly” with many writing that they’d rather ignore the fact that Yahoo even owns Flickr. It’s kinda sad that even though Yahoo owns one of the most popular photo-sharing sites on the web, Flickr’s users would rather not be reminded of that fact. Perhaps Yahoo should start to make nice with its younger, hipster users that reside outside of middle America.

And here’s something for laughs—a funny mockup from a community member:

As a flickr user, I have to admit, it was very unsettling to see the Yahoo brand attached to flickr. Yes I KNOW THEY OWN IT, have always known, but this move is very symbolical and symbols are usually never accepted by all, especially not by me. Why put your ugly logo next to a brand that stands ok on it’s own, what plans do they have? I don’t know, maybe it’s a knee jerk reaction, but I’m not happy about this at all.
